The soil in the Greek islands is very dry and rocky, yet plants grow everywhere.
Not many trees survive on the hills, except low growing prickly shrubs, tough grasses and wild thyme. Bees love the purple flowers and produce an aromatic honey which makes a delicious breakfast with creamy local yoghurt.
And last but not least, the flowering thyme looks beautiful amongst the dry yellow grass and the stones.
